Buyer's Guide - Tablet PC

Newest trend in the air is about owning tablets, phablets or you call them Tablet PCs, obviously you get confused so as to what is better for you?

So GadgetsFreak team worked upon tablets, and made buyer's guide. We hope you will like this, if you like humble request is to like & share it on social networks.

Buying tablet is somewhat similar to smart phones however, few things should be considered upon.

Processor:-

Most of the tablet are armed with ARM processors,  which are Cortex A5, A8 and A9 . Cortex A5 is the basic processor which has clock speed of 800Mz and Cortex A8 can be a single core or dual core with clock speed up to 1.5Ghz, Cortex A9 can have clock speed up to 2 Ghz.

Higher the speed doesn't necessarily mean better performance, because RAM size, customized applications can play different role here.

However you are a moderate user who plays game a lot, movies, browsing etc, then you should minimum opt for 800 Mhz processor and if you are gaming freak, do lot of stuff online, play online games suggested processor is 1 Ghz and above.

Bottom line is you shall select a tablet with processor minimum 1 Ghz.

RAM:-

Higher the RAM, better is the performance, because whenever you do any work, application and data is opened in RAM,  Make sure your tablet has atleast 512Mb RAM, some cheaper tablets have 256Mb ram, which will not lead to better performance.

So recommended RAM size for moderate users is 512Mb, and for heavy users it is 1GB RAM.

Internal Storage:-

We generally don't store more data aka movies, songs, applications in to tablet compared to laptop, so tablets have smaller internal storage ranging from 4GB to 32GB.

You don't get to use all the advertised internal storage as, android OS and it's data will share the same internal storage.

So for example if you have 4GB internal storage you get to use 2 GB only. However you can expand the memory using MicroSD card,

But still recommended storage is atleast 8GB for ease.

Screen Size, Resolution and Weight:-

Tablets normally start from 7 inch and available up to 22 inches. Now obviously you want to use it as your travel companion or for daily use, it would be difficult to hold the tablet if size is more than 7-8 Inch.

Higher the resolution better the picture on screen e.g. 800 x 480, 1024 x 768 etc. Actually this number indicated the pixel in screen, so more the pixel better is the picture.

Pixel the the smallest part of the screen, if you stare at the screen very closely you can see pixels.

Refer below images to understand resolution. Lower image has better resolution as it uses more pixels.

Also one should compare the weight while checking device specifications as you need to hold it.

Recommended screen size is atleast 7 inch for all most all users and resolution is minimum 800x480.

Battery:-

Better to have a battery with higher mah, which is mili ampere per hour. So always check out & compare in between the tablets you like as higher mah means higher battery back up.

Connections:-

Since tablets are used mainly for mobility, their connections options becomes more important. Most tablets come equipped with WiFi, and external dongle which can work on EVDO / 3G.

Since in India we don't have much wifi zones, better to ensure that your tablet has external dongle which can work on EVDO / 3G.

Also check which dongles are supported as many manufacturer play game here, Micromax Infinity only supports TATA PHOTON EC156 modem so limiting your options of operator.

If you want to use your tablet as phone also, ensure there is SIM slot and bluetooth as without bluetooth headset it will not be comfortable to handle a 7 inch phone :)

Here we recommend at least WiFi and External Dongle support for 2G / 3G / EVDO in your tablet.

Incase of any support / feedback please comment.

  1. Hi,

    Really very informative buying guide.

As you pointed here, I want a Phone Cum Tablet. But I have no much money to invest for that. So what is your opinion about Videocon VT 75C Tablet? Which dongles it will support? I'm using internet for browsing, simple games like angry birds, social networking, video chat, and for blogging also. So is it suitable for me? Lava E-Tab Connect Tablet, Micromax Funbook 3G P600 Tablet and Videocon VT 75C Tablet comparatively which is good?
