Hands On Review - Ubislate 7C+ aka Aakash 3 from Datawind.


I received my Ubislate 7C+ few days back and here is the hands on review for this budget android tablet, giving tough fight to Micromax and others in India.

This tablet is now available in the market, also available online at many shopping websites.

This device is now proposed by Datawind to Indian Government at Rs 2500/- a piece to be called Akash3. In addition this will be now upgradable to Jelly Bean if govt accepts the proposal.

Processor:  1 Ghz A8 cortex Processor.
Simslot:  Available
GPU:  Available as embedded HD video co-processor.
Operating System: ICS, Android v4.0.
Screen Type:  7 inch, 5-point touch capacitive screen with a resolution of 800X480.
Memory: Internal memory of 4GB, extendable to 32GB and 512MB RAM.
Connectivity:  WiFi - 802.11 B/g/n, 3G and GPRS using simslot
Camera: VGA front camera.
Built in GPS:  GPS using GPRS.
Video:  Supports up to 720P, HD
Audio: Stereo speaker, has 3.5mm jack for Handsfree.
Browser: Ubisurfer browser & Android Browser.
G-sensor: Available.
Ports: Micro USB 2.0, Mic, Micro SD slot.
Battery:  3200 mAH
Flash support: Supports Flash 11.1 and above.

 Please refer below snapshot models shown here are supported like...plug n play no hiccups...no matter whoever is your 3G operator, if your dongle is listed below...no problem in internet thro dongle.

Review:-

From the list of features its quite impressive and performs well up to the expectation.

The user interface is very nice, thanks to Ice Cream Sandwich Operating system from Android.

Touch Screen perform well, and no issues at all, it is as good as Samsung phones.


Processor is quite fast and doesn't lag / hang. Sound Quality is good.

It has sleek design but if you are used to have 3 to 4 inch phone then this is quite bulky compare to phones.

It has very good battery back up runs more than 4 hours easily with continuous Wi-Fi.
It has one year warranty as well.

What this tablet lacks is no HDMI support you can't connect this to your LED / LCD TV to play videos.
Also camera quality is so-so becuase it's a VGA camera but I belive in this price range 5k-6k across all manufacturers you get is VGA camera only.

Also You Tube application hangs so may be need to remove and install again.

Its wonderful tablet at this price, Rs 5199, it's nearest competitor is Micromax Funbook Talk priced at 
Rs 7199, so you have benefit of at least Rs 2K here.

      Dear Sir,

      Android is the Linux based operating system mainly designed for Touch Screen devices, this operating system is from Google.

      The interesting thing about it is, they are naming the different version of operating system in line with food items, eg cup cake, ice cream sandwich.

      Android 4 is ice cream sandwich operating system, popularly known as ICS

      currently 4.1 & 4.2 are out there know as jelly bean.

      Dear Sir,

      As of now there are no service center in Bengaluru...but say in the unlikely event of problem in tablet, you can send courier to datawind and they can send back after repairs though little bit hectic.

      About Rs 100/- Month data plan, nothing is finalized yet things are on paper only.

      But now a days, all operators offer cheaper data plans so you can buy any SIM and use GPRS.

      I have updated the post, please see the supported dongles topics, here I would like to highlight, no matter who is operator eg tata, reliance, airtel, dongle provided by your operator should fall in the said "supported dongles list"...

      If you are buying new one, you can ask the dealer that you need dongle out of this specified list only...

      If it is so, you will not face any problem. I am using Airtel 3G.

      Dear Sir,

      From the specifications of Infinity and if you don't need calling than Micromax Infinity is better choice, but beware it supports only 1 dongle and that is TATA PHOTON+ EC156.

      I suggest you shall look for BSNL Penta as well, if this dongle is not available near you.

      Hi Sir,

      If you get unlocked ZTE MF190, ZTE AC2737 & EC159 then and then it will support all SIM, so you will have to find out in a market around you whether you get it unlocked or not but if you buy from say TATA / Reliance obviously it will support their SIM only.

      Now coming to question of Xbuster processor, as far as applications are supported there should not be a problem.

    Hi Sir,

    Considering the specifications and the price range I wouldn't have bought for my self. (1) Due to Poor RAM with regards to Jelly Bean OS. (2) only 1GB internal memory very less even ubislate has 4 GB.

    In the same price range...I suggest T-Pad-IS703C. Advantage in IS703C is, 1 GB RAM, 8GB internal memory, 4000 mah battery.

      From the tablet specifications, it is not supporting Beetel MF631, as you would have seen, supported dongles photo in above post.

      But you can try if any of friend has beetel MF631 in tablet.

      Dear Sir, First of all my apologies for late response. You will have to do a bit of research.

      (1) First of all list out 3G service providers in your area, study their price. Say after this you selected, TATA or Reliance.
      (2) Go to their store, ask them the model numbers I have mentioned in snapshot, you can have any modem/dongle, once it is their in the list of supported dongles.

      Then it is simple, just plug it and it will work.

      Even though if you face any problem please do let me know.

    Dear Mam, Yes this will definitely suffice all your requirements in Class XII. But say if you can stretch your budget by Rs 3000/- You can get best choice available today in market which is WS707C BSNL Penta

      Hi Mayank,

      You can go for Ubislate 7C+, only disadvantage I see with it, Bluetooth not available, you need to connect external bluetooth dongle.

      So if you don't want to use it as a mobile, then not a problem with Ubislate7C+.

      Regarding your question with E1550 modem support, I don't see this modem listed as supported dongle, so it will not support.

      You can check yourself in the photos attached.

      Dear Sir,

      Now for airtel GPRS using airtel SIM, there is no guide required.

      Check that in Settings ---> Mobile Network Setting ---> Data enabled is checked. ( blue tick mark will appear)

      (1) Just Insert SIM.
      (2) Restart the tablet.

      It will automatically detect the SIM & Internet settings. I have just tried this.

      For Tata Photon please let me know your dongle's hadrware model number like company Huawei / ZTE model number MF190 / EC156 etc.

    Hi Sir,

    Pros:- Cheap by Rs 2000/- compared to Micromax Funbook Talk, despite of this both tablets have similar configuration.
    SIM calling tablet at this price is amazing, no one in India is offering this.


    Cons:- Doesn't have bluetooth, though Micromax Funbook also doesn't have bluetooth.
    Lacks rear camera which is there in Micromax Funbook talk

    CoD:- In cash on delivery, once your order is ready they will call you, and confirm your order, if you confirm that yes you still want to buy, they will send it thro' courier, where you will have to pay first before opening box.

    WiFi - WiFi is wireless internet but works in smaller range, such wifi networks are available at college campuses, airports & shopping malls etc where you can switch on wifi in tab and use free internet. so Wifi will not be available everywhere.

    Now so if you live in a city where, wifi is not easily available, you can insert Vodafone, airtel or idea's or any 2G operator's SIM in tablet and you can use internet over GPRS.

    Also there is external dongle support in tablet if you need 3G, similar to SIM GPRS but quite faster.

      Hi Sir,

      May be 2-3 weeks before it gets delivered to you.

      Octroi charges are basically taxes on the goods moved between 2 municipal corporations areas, Here you are buying product from Delhi and getting it in Maharashtra, courier person will have the receipt of the same you will have to pay some x % on MRP of ubislate. But I don't know the x% amount may be you can talk to some retailer in your area.

      We don't have any octroi in Gujarat thanks to Mr Modi :)

      After inserting SIM, restart the tablet if doesn't work then,

      In which circle do you live? I mean Guj, Maharashtra, etc accordingly we need to set the APN.

    It's a nice short review. Thanks for posting it. I've this tablet on 01 Feb. It is a nice tablet.

    Have you faced any issue while accessing internet through SIM? I'm using DOCOMO SIM and it gets disconnected intermittently. In the status bar it shows 'No internet connection' :-( Surprisingly during this time I'm able to make. receive calls/ SMSes. After some time it again shows Tata DOCOMO in the status bar and I'm able to access the internet again.

    I tried to contact the customer care but the people sitting there do not have any idea about the tablet and they just ask to reset the tab. That's it.

    Also the charger is not working since yesterday. It's giving electric shock at the end and not charging the tab.

    Help me if you can. Thanks once again.

    Dear Sir,

    Yes, the problem you are telling is not the problem actually, that's the software design to save battery so whenever your tablet is idle, it will stop internet connection, but software is not that intelligent to enable internet fast as soon as user, starts using the tablet again.

    So when you find that your tablet has lost connection, just access a program like fb, gmail and it will automatically enable internet connection.

    Now for charger datawind should replace as there seems to be problem.

      Thanks a lot for your reply. I do not think that it is a software design. When tab shows 'No internet connection', and I try to access FB or Opera, it shows that there isn't any internet connection, check GPRS settings. And as I mentioned in earlier post, after some time it shows 'Tata Docomo' and I'm able to access internet :-(

      BTW, how come you know that it is a software design?

      I'll check for the charger issue with datawind. Dropped an email to them yesterday. May be I'll call them...

      Hi Mr Sanjay,

      You can use 2G SIM only in Ubislate 7C+, so for 2G you shall not use dongle.

      For 3G/WCDMA all the dongles shown here are supported.

      Hi Mr Pillai,

      Power off the device, after that Press Volume UP+Home+Power button at a time until the tablet's logo screen is displayed. When the tablet’s logo screen is displayed, release the Power button but continue holding the Volume + home button until the Android System Recovery menu is displayed.

      then with the volume up & down button select factory reset.

      and you are done! but you will lose all your data as this is factory reset.

      Hi Sir

      I was lucky that I could connect to datawind support team, i discussed your problem with them, he is telling, you connect the dongle / insert SIM so that tablet will detect the gprs/ internet network.

      And then you try google account's user & pw to unlock tablet.

      I am surprised the way they are giving suggestions. Since I don't have EC156 modem to test, I can only tell, please try getting it from friend, because for TATA PHOTON all most all dongles are EC156.

      Have you tried resetting the tablet, with a paper pin, to a RESET hole for 3 seconds on back side??? May be you can give it a try.

    After Factory RESET, I am facing problem of UBISLATE get hanged up. As soon as I power it on and if the USB 3G dongle is connected, the screen goes hay-wire (blank and at times with orange or blue color)

    However, if I use UBISLATE without the USB 3G stick/dongle, it works fine. I have tried several times and found that if the USB 3G Dongle (Huawei E173) is connected, it hangs.

    However, prior to Factory Reset, the same 3G USB dongle was working fine.

    Could this be due to factory reset or something else.

      This is not due to factory reset, I have done reset many times.

      You try one more factory reset & erase all data, may be any application is creating problem, Even after this problem doesn't get resolved, Pls contact datawind, some Hardware problem may be there.

      Also you can check after replacing dongle, may dongle got some problem.

    I wanted to know how to download apps through laptop.I connected the usb connector (provided by datawind) to my laptop.
    yesterday, i tried installing apps like talking tom, whats app etc. but i couldn't install them in my ubislate 7c+.
    1) I went to google search and then to play store of google to install apps.
    2) As asked,I signed in as a user and through that account i installed the apps, but the same was not installed in my ubislate. It rather got installed in my play store in my apps.
    But it showed that I successfully installed the said apps in my tablet. Nothing is been installed in my tablet yet.

    pls guide me how to install apps in my ubislate7c+ thru laptop by usb connector.

      Hi Sir,

      I am doing good.

      (1) You mean to say internet is ON in laptop and you need app to be installed in Tablet then it's not possible, because what it does is, whenever from laptop we click on install it will go trigger your android device to download but since internet is not on in tablet download will fail.

      (2) Other idea to install applications in TAB without internet is search for .apk file of required application. Say I want whatsapp I will search for whatsapp.apk, I will download this file in to Laptop, then I will transfer .apk file to my tablet and install application. You can try searching almost any applications .apk file you will get it 110%.

      Please do let me know if any other help is required.

    Since the android applications do get updated frequently, it may be possible that whatever .apk file you are using is older. Try to download latest file from net.

    Try search like, Download latest version of whatsapp...etc...

    Want to share my feedback for Ubislate 7c+..
    I have purchased Ubislate 7c+ online and right now busy in exploring the features of it. I would say..this tablet is completely worth to buy at all...Till now, I didn't find any technical glitches in it. Initially, camera was not working but after the tech support guidance, it is on track...
    Touch Screen is also good...
    User Interface is also good..
    Calling Feature with 3g sim is also good..
    Camera is not superb....but I think you can't expect more than that from VGA camera..
    HD video experience is also good..

    1. The option of Purchasing from shops is not feasible for me as I am living abroad. This tablet is for the use of my parents. I just want to know if the 72hours delivery time mentioned by Datawind in their website is reliable in light of the various logistic complaints about Aakash seen over the internet.
    2. I have an unlocked Huawei E1732 3G dongle with me. Please advise whether it will work with this tablet.
    3. What is meant by DataWind’s patented acceleration technology. Is it really advantageous?
    4. It is stated above that since the tablet does not have a HDMI port, TV connectivity is not possible. If my TV has got USB ports, will it be possible to connect the tablet to TV using USB cable and watch the content in the tablet on TV?

    (2) I can't gurantee support of E1732, as it is not listed in supported dongles.

    (3) Forget about their acceleration, as their browser is not good to use, better to go for android browser.

    (4) You will not be able to connect to TV.

    Thank You very much for the prompt response. It is not late by any means.
    Based on your reply I think i have to decide against Ubislate 7C+ as I can not make use of many features offered by them. Actually I have a BSNL T-PAD (Penta IS 703C) with me which was purchased in August 2012 through e-bay. Initially it was working fine, but after about 4 months of use it stopped working. When switched on it hangs after showing the "Penta" name on the screen and not going any further. I am not able to figure out if it is a software or Hardware problem. In Kuwait (I am living in Kuwait), I could not find any repair shop that repairs the T-Pad. Is there any way to make it working? I have seen your advise to press three buttons together for resetting Ubislate or some other tablet. Is there similar procedure to bring back my T- Pad to normal life? Kindly advise.

      Hi Sir,

      The problem with budget tablet manufacturer is they lack after sales support.

      Here in case of Penta, you can factory reset it and may be it can work again but for that we need to enter recovery mode, I searched for atleast 2-3 days but couldn't find a way to enter in to recovery mode for this tablets.

      May be you can try penta's customer support number +91-120-4805200 and tell them that you are abroad and now stuck, please let me know how to enter in to recovery mode.

    I have recieved my Ubilsate 7Ci last month and i am trying to connect my 2G Tataphoton+ (Huwai EC1261) with my tablet...but its not detecting the same...what needs to be done...i have verified the USB port is working fine by connecting USB Drive.

      Hi Sir,

      Sorry for the late response.

      For all ubislate tablets, external modem supports only 3G and not 2G.

      Initially I was also confused I was trying different supported dongles for EVDO / 2G those were not working, if you study the specs, it is 3g support via external dongle and not 2g :)

      To confirm same you can call datawind support.

    hello Mr.jignesh im kiran from karnataka im a parttime jurnolist in bangalore working in cerime nota newspaper. i recently bought ubislate 7c+ smartphone its very good in working and quality is also quite better.as i have used samsung tab ubislate is quite better for what we paid. but recently i bought a aircel GSM sim to use in my tablet and i activated it in another phone but when i use the sim in ubislate its showing no connection and even cant make calls to others. my mobile no is 8892264240( newly bought sims no ) u can email me suggesions my email id kshaddy1996@gmail.com looking for solution thank u

      Hi sir, pls ensure sim is correctly inserted in tablet. in ubislate if sim is not correctly inserted it will not detect lt.

    I was facing issue with checking balance (and with other MMI codes). Whenever I dial *111# it shows error message "Connection problem or invalid MMI code). I thought this was only my problem.

    I contacted Datawind support today and they said that we can not run MMI codes on tablet. To check balance we have to use phone :-(

    When I talked about intermittent internet connection problem the guy simply disconnected the phone. This has happened thrice now.

    My charger got non-functional automatically. And there is no warranty for charger. We have to send Rs 250 to Datawind for charger and they will send it in 15 days (as per the CC executive)! But I do not want to take risk of dealing with Datawind again so I ordered on online (though it is costlier). Meanwhile I'm charging it with USB cable :D

      Thanks for sharing info about MMI, I will update in review,

      Yes, the problem about losing internet connection, is not the problem actually, that's the software design to save battery so whenever your tablet is idle, it will stop internet connection, but software is not that intelligent to enable internet fast as soon as user, starts using the tablet again.

      So when you find that your tablet has lost connection, just access a program like fb, gmail and it will automatically enable internet connection.

      Now for charger, take the charger to any mobile accessories shop, he can give you new one based on ampere ratings and there should not be any problem.

      But this internet connection problem is driving me crazy. When it is lost, and even if I access fb, gmail, browser it doesn't connect to it :-(

      Don't know what to do. Anyways that is not stopping me from enjoying this tablet though :-)

      To sort out the internet issue, there one solution but it will void the warranty. So better to live with that only.

      However sign the below petition this will pressurise datawind to release their drivers and ROM so that developers can work on it.

      I believe RAM is something which you can't check. As far as Internal Memory is concerned, 4 GB is there but System OS will also use the same so you get to use 1.5 to 1.7 Gb.

      We can check the RAM as well. Go to Settings -> Apps and tap on Running apps it will show the total RAM and free RAM.

      Funbook got a dual camera + bluetooth, with bluetooth it will be easier to use the tablet as a phone.

      You can go for ubislate7c+ also, but there is no bluetooth which will make it cumbersome to use as a fone.

      In my 2 months of usage no issues found, but you can read here questions from Nitin kumar for further feedback in this page only.

      This is common question about connecting ext bluetooth to Ubislate till now there is no success I am in touch with many developers too. Please let me know if you know someone who can develop such application.

      You can go for Ubislate 7C+ edge also only diff is our old tablet doesn't support EDGE this supports Edge so you get high speed gprs in SIM also.

      I am fine, You should not find any problem with device in general, but there are no service center of datawind as of now except Amritsar.

      Say if you can spend 1000 rupees more you can get better choice of Videocon Vt-75 C where you have HDMI, Bluetooth & Dual camera.

      Settings for android phones.

      Open Settings
      Go to wireless & Networks

      Select Mobile networks

      Select SIM card settings, Select TATA Docomo.

      Go to Access Point Names.

      Click on left soft key (MENU) and select new APN.

      Edit Name : TATA DOCOMO

      APN : TATA.DOCOMO.INTERNET or TATA.DOCOMO.INTERNETHVC

      Leave rest all fields empty.

      Click on left soft key(MENU) and save the settings.

      Again go to Access Point Names and Enable TATA DOCOMO APN.

      Now your android phone is successfully configured to use internet/gprs on Tata Docomo Sim.
